Officials Advise Screening of Adults for Alcohol on Doctor Visits

In some time to come, one can expect a drinking check-up to get conducted upon people when they visit their doctor. This can indeed be a possibility because the United States Preventive Services Task Force has come up with a recommendation. They have recommended screenings for unhealthy alcohol use among all those adults, who are 18 or older, also including pregnant women. The organization is hopeful of the fact that the new tests will find people who engage in risky or harmful activities drinking and hence provide them with counselling.

The United States Preventive Services Task Force reports that from the year 2006 to 2010, the excess use of alcohol was the most common reason behind premature deaths in the United States. There is an estimation that around 88000 deaths occurred due to crashes and diseases related to alcohol like an alcoholic liver disease. Researchers have defined the unhealthy use of alcohol as something that goes well beyond the recommended limits. As per the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the recommended limit is, one should not have in excess of four drinks in a day and maximum of 14 drinks in a week for men, who are aged within 21 to 64 years. On the other hand, for women and for all those men aged more than 65 years, the recommended limit is that of three drinks in a day and not exceeding seven drinks in a week.

Recently the United States Preventive Services Task Force had recently conducted a study. Through the study, they found out about the net benefit that screening and behavioural counselling for a brief period had on all those indulging in the intake of alcohol. They noted that both these interventions among adults as well as on pregnant women for unhealthy use of alcohol turned out to be quite moderate in nature. Still, the researchers said that there is not enough evidence, which could prove that it could prove to be helpful for all those who are under the age of 18 years. Hence, they have called for more research on this aspect.
