Tumblr to Ban All Adult Content, Starting from December 17

Tumblr has been one of the very few social media websites that haven’t blocked pornographic content from the service. Users were able to include explicit pornographic content in their posts, images and other media. All these would change from December 17, the deadline the microblogging platform has set for banning all sorts of adult content from the service.

An official blog post from Tumblr says that “Adult content will no longer be allowed here”, putting a leash to what many Tumblr users have been doing in the past years. This move comes particularly after the iOS app for Tumblr was removed from iOS App Store due to the child pornography-related violation as cited by the tech giant. Even before, Tumblr has faced issues regarding adult content that is published on the website. “We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance,” says the official blog post from Tumblr.

Of course, Tumblr had to exclude a few things from the adult content category, as to prevent the freedom of the user community. For instance, illustrations, as well as other art that have nude content, would not be blocked from the service. Similarly, photographs of protests where nudity is used as a method would also be allowed on the service. All the other media is off the Tumblr desk. Tumblr has already constructed an algorithm that finds and flags adult content on the website. Users who’ve posted adult content before have been mailed by the service, and all such posts would be made private from 17th of December. Starting from the date, however, all the explicit posts would be recognized and deleted by the algorithm.
